Tec 40

PADI Tec – Tec 40

Why PADI Tec 40?

The PADI Tec 40 course is where you transition from recreational diving to technical diving. It’s a natural progression from Tec Basics, or it can be your first tec diver course. It is the bridge between no stop diving and technical decompression diving.

You will gain experience and begin building the knowledge and skills you need to continue your tec diver training. You will qualify to make limited decompression dives to 40 metres and use up to 50 percent oxygen as a decompression gas.

Curious about trimix?

Curious about the benefits of using Trimix gas, like decreased gas density and reduced narcosis? Tec 40 divers can also learn to use trimix with not less than 21 percent oxygen and not more than 35 percent helium. Ask your instructor what additional requirements you may need to complete the Tec 40 Trimix option.

What do you need to start?

To enroll in the Tec 40 / Tec 40 Trimix course, you must meet these qualifications:
 PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (PADI Rescue Diver recommended).
 PADI Enriched Air Diver.
 PADI Deep Diver or proof of 10 dives to 30 metres or deeper.
 30 logged dives.
 18 years old.

You also need to have a Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organizations may apply – ask your PADI Tec Instructor.

What will you do?

The Tec 40 course consists of seven knowledge development sections (conducted as e-learning in your own time), four practical application sessions and four training dives.

You’ll learn about:
 Technical diving risks and responsibilities.
 Technical diving equipment, dive equipment configuration, and use.
 Team diving and communication.
 Decompression and gas planning using dive planning software.
 Team diving techniques and emergency procedures to deal with free flows and out of gas situations.
 Thinking like a technical diver.
 Handling underwater problems, valve drills & gas sharing.
 Introduction to trimix (for Tec 40 Trimix students).

What equipment will you need?

You’ll dive air or EANx, including up to 50 percent enriched air for decompression. If you’re taking the Tec 40 Trimix Diver course, you’ll also use trimix.

You will need the following equipment:
 Mask and fins.
 Exposure suit appropriate for environment and dive duration. (If you will use a dry suit, you should be trained/experienced with its use in recreational and technical diving prior to using them for Tec 40 training or diving.)
 Full scuba unit – BCD, regulator with alternative air source, tank.
 One stage/decompression cylinder with mounting hardware (must be oxygen clean).
 One regulator and SPG for stage/decompression cylinder (must be oxygen clean).
 Dive computer (air, enriched air or multigas)
 Knife/cutting device and backup.
 Compass.
 Slate.
 Weight system.
You will also need access to dive planning software.

Recommended Equipment

 Tec BCD or backplate, harness and wing (redundant buoyancy control – either double bladder or dry suit if suitable for weight of equipment worn).
 Double cylinders with manifold.
 Primary and secondary regulators (1st and 2nd stages – one with a two-metre hose and one with SPG).
 Lights (primary and back-up).
 Backup mask and pocket.
 Surface marker buoy (deployable from depth).

What is included?

 Tec 40 Diver Crew-Pak that includes PADI Tec 40 Diver eLearning, which you’ll study
independently before meeting with your PADI Tec 40 Instructor.
 Three evenings of knowledge development and practical application.
 One confined water dive (pool or shore).
 Three boat dives.
