October saw us loaded with courses and a number of students achieving PADI and CDAA certifications - Congratulations to our latest and freshest Open Water Divers a hearty welcome to the scuba diving world, to our Enriched Air and Advanced Open Water crew on stepping up your diving skills, to our three Sidemount guys and to our CDAA Deep Cavern Divers! Keep expanding your diving knowledge with our club dives, dive travel and continuing education courses, so many more diving adventures await!

Speaking of dive travel, I was fortunate enough to lead my first grand trip to Vanuatu with 19 of our fabulous customers. Over 9 days we managed 14 dives on the SS President Coolidge, a dive a Million Dollar Point and even a Night dive on the Coolidge where we witnessed a magical display of Flash light fish dancing inside the cargo holds. It was a memorable time both underwater and above, with the last day spent relaxing and absorbing the whole trip experience at the Blue Holes and lunch at Champagne Beach. A MASSIVE thank you to Rehan and his team at Aquamarine and to The Espirtu for your hospitality and customer service that was exceptional. Can't wait to book in a trip back in 2017!

All the best to Warrick and Jane and those lucky travelers joining them on their trip to Milne Bay PNG departing tomorrow. Hope you have some beaut diving! I'm sure there'll be plenty of photos to share on Facebook upon their return!

Weather here is on the rise, with our water temperatures creeping up to 17-18 in the bay! We've enjoyed some great Saturday shore dives over the past month, so nice to see more of you getting out to start your weekend with a splash. Last Saturday we had 12 club divers at Ricketts Point, who all managed an 85 minute dive over the untouched reef, accompanied with fiddler rays, dozens of common stingrays, nudibranchs, dusky morwongs and more. We have a huge list of November Club dives, boat dives, shore dives and dusk dives... Why not try something different and get involved in the Great Victorian Fish Count!

Lastly please note our adjusted shop hours for Melbourne Cup... Even though horse races might not be your thing, at least we get a day off to go diving! : ) Liz.

GREAT VICTORIAN
FISHCOUNT 2015!

Saturday 28th November @9:30am

Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron

What is the Great Victorian Fish Count?
Once a year hundreds of volunteer divers and snorkellers plunge into Victoria’s marine waters as part of the largest community-led ocean monitoring program in the state.
The Great Victorian Fish Count helps us discover which fish species live in Victoria’s temperate coastal waters.
What do you need to do?
You can Snorkel or Dive. If you snorkel, bring your mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuit. If you're a certified diver gather your Scuba gear and come out for a dive/snorkel to survey the fish species at the site.
We'll supply you with fish ID kits to collect data on a list of marine species, Ocean Divers will correlate the data and report our findings.
What's the cost?
The event if FREE, the only cost will be hire equipment, and we are offering a hire special for the event:
  • Tank Hire $10
  • Scuba Unit $30
  • Weightbelt $5
  • Wetsuit $15
How do we sign up?
Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 9579 2600 with your name and contact number to enroll.

You will learn how to use wreck penetration lines and use them in zero visibility “silt out” situations. Discover a world where time stands still and only fish move by.

CRITTER CORNER

 "PORT JACKSON SHARK"

One of the many species of marine animals that are endemic to Australia's temperate waters (and a personal favourite of Jono's!), the Port Jackson Shark is anything but a mindless, man-eating killing machine as sharks are depicted in some movies.... This particluar species of shark has also had a rare occasion along the coast of New Zealand.

Growing to a length of approximately 1.5m, they are most commonly found on or near the bottom of rocky platforms, sandy and muddy flats, even seagrass beds serve as a nice habitat for these blunt headed sharks. Any depth down to 100m these sharks can be sighted, so perfect for any level of diver - yet there's always an outlier: reports have noted that they can be found as deep as 275m! Their teeth and harness-like markings along the side of its body make the Port Jackson Shark an easily identifiable species. Be careful of their dorsal spikes, as it is rumored that these are poisonous....

Simliar to a human's K9 and molar teeth, the Port Jackson shark also posess two distinctive teeth types: front teeth to hold and break; back teeth to crush and grind! On the menu for PJ's are mollusks, echinoderms, small fishes & squid!

You may be lucky enough to find these sharks either alone or in a mass all piled on top of one another underneath a rocky ledge. Despite laying still, they are able to breathe the water via pumping water in through their enlarged first gill slit, then out and over the other four gills. By having this unique ability, Port Jackson sharks can eat and breathe at the same time.

Luckily, we don't have to travel very far to find these stunning sharks, as they're always in and around the Rickett's Point Marine Sanctuary in numbers of sorts at any given time of the year. With the days becoming longer and the water getting warmer, why not go for a dive in Beaumaris after work/study or sneak out on the weekend for a quick seach of these timid creatures?!

BENSON'S BARK

 Happy Halloween!!

Five young guys were walking home after a Halloween party and decided to take a shortcut through the local cemetery, when they were startled by a loud tap-tap-tapping noise coming from somewhere in the misty dark. The five of them were terrified and trembling with fear, but came across a very old white man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.

"Holy cow, Mister", one of them said, "You scared us half to death, we thought you were a ghost! What are you doing working here so late at night?"

"Those fools!" the very old white man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!"

The first Melbourne Cup was held in 1861 and Archer, the winning horse, collected £170 and a gold watch for his efforts. Legend has it that Archer walked all the way to Melbourne from his stables in Nowra, NSW – about 800km. By comparison, the winner of the 2011 Melbourne Cup will take home $3.6 million, and approximately half the horses will have flown here from overseas. - See more at: http://www.readersdigest.com.au/melbourne-cup#sthash.my4sfHGM.dpuf
